Blackwell Library will be open 24 hours a day this week!!! There’s a catch though. It’ll only be only 24 hours a day for 5 days this week and you won’t be able to use library supplies after 2am. But, it is progress after many students in the past have complained about the lack of a place to study after-hours.
Here’s the schedule courtesy of The Flyer:
Sunday 12/1 11 a.m. to Friday 12/6 10 p.m.
Saturday 12/7 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Sunday 12/8 11 a.m. to Friday 12/13 8 p.m.
Last school year around March, students started a petition to get the library opened 24/7. Here are some details from WMDT (disclosure: I was interviewed for the story):
The students behind the petition say extra hours could help them perform better in their studies. “I’m gonna be studying a lot of medical terms. Everything, so I can’t just be ‘alright you gotta leave at 2:00 AM’ I might have to go until 3 or 4,” said Logan Middlekauff, who started the petition.
They say if it were open later, more students would utilize the facilities. “I Feel like students don’t come to the library as much because it’s not open 24 hours. Which is why late at night you probably only see 5 or 6 people in the library,” said Jessie Karangu, a sophomore that helped spread the petition.
BTW, just a suggestion. If you ever need a place to study: Dunkin’ Donuts is definitely the move. Free wifi and it’s open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
