Here’s the story from Fox 45:
Gov. Martin O’Malley is proposing Maryland raise its minimum wage to $10.10 an hour by 2016. The governor said at a rally in Annapolis on Tuesday night that the more people earn, the more customers businesses have. O’Malley also supports indexing the minimum wage to keep up with inflation. The Democratic governor has made the minimum wage hike from $7.25 an hour a priority of his legislative agenda this session, the last of his final term. Maryland last raised the minimum wage in 2005.
POSITIVES OF MINIMUM WAGE INCREASE:
- better wages for workers
- more chances of affordability for healthcare, food expenses, school expenses etc.
NEGATIVES OF MINIMUM WAGE INCREASE:
- less jobs, employers may not be able to afford an increase in wages for all their employees if they want to sustain a profit
- increase in product prices in order for the businesses to be able to afford increase in wages to workers which could also decrease demand for the product
