#WhyIStayed and #WhyILeft

by JESSICA MARQUEZ

Ray Rice and Janay Rice have been at the center of controversy ever since TMZ Sports released an elevator video on September 8, 2014. The video explicitly shows Ray Rice hitting Janay and then dragging her out of the elevator as she’s unconscious.

The video has raised tremendous conversation on social media. Two of the biggest trends have been #WhyIStayed and #WhyILeft on Twitter. Victims of domestic violence have turned to Twitter and shared their stories.

At first glance, you may read these tweets and think to yourself, really, she/ he could have just left? I mean it’s simple right? In reality it’s much more complex than it looks. You have to consider that everyone is different.

It’s important to remember that domestic violence is not only physical violence.  It also includes sexual, emotional, and physiological.

Women are not the only ones who are victims of domestic violence, men are too.

If you feel like you are in a domestic violence relationship, seek help through a friend, family member, doctor, or even school. The National Domestic Violence Hotline is also available at 1-800-799-7233 or at http://www.thehotline.org.
