VegFest 2014

I didn’t want to get up at all. It’s nine o’clock in the morning and if you’re up at that hour on a Saturday morning you must loathe sleep. I for one do not but I still fight through the feeling of fatigue namely because my best friend, Taylor, is urging me to get up and get ready. I quickly steady myself up and get over the temptation for sleeping in because we’re off to the D.C. VegFest!

The D.C. VegFest was held in the parking lot adjacent to Nationals Park on the most radiant Saturday. I’d never been to this festival but I was quickly convinced by Taylor and a couple of other fellow vegetarian friends saying that it would certainly be worth the mildly long Metro ride. And it was.

There were hundreds of tents, each soliciting variations of vegan clothing, body products, and of course, food! The amount of vegan food within that parking lot easily out-shined those in found in any grocery store. There were hefty lines of people, all whom included vegans, vegetarians and meat-eaters alike. There was fresh coconut water straight from the fruit, cupcakes, cheese, samosas, lentils, juices, dairy-free ice cream and so much more.

VegFest was sponsored by an assorted number of companies and organizations, including The Humane Society and Sweet & Natural. Between our pickings of free samples, the tents that offered information on animal abuse and wrongdoings of the food industry cemented the beliefs of many who attended that we choose to live this lifestyle not only for our own health benefits but because we care. Because we cannot take part in a practice that harms animals.

It became comforting to know that there are such abundant amounts of people who share the same values and exciting that they have all gathered in one place at the same time. Even those who do consume meat came and surely left with a better sense of what it means to be a responsible consumer. I wish everyone could’ve attended VegFest on Saturday but since the free samples have long gone and the tents are folded and packed away, there is always next year.
