The Student Empowerment Project took over TerpZone Thursday night with the help of other student-run organizations as well as three UMD chapters of Divine 9 Greeks.
The purpose of this event was to collect clothing for Martha’s Table, an organization which helps the needy living in our nation’s capitol by “providing healthy food, affordable clothing,
and quality education.”
Admission was handled in a very unique way: attendees had to donate a piece of clothing.
Once inside, free cookies and drinks were provided. Students also took advantage of TerpZone’s luxuries such as videogames, pool and bowling alongside their friends.
WMUC set the tone for this event, playing hip-hop bangers throughout the night, but the main attraction was a stroll-off.
Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc., Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. all participated in a 2-round showdown (Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. strolled but did not participate in the competition) which saw the men of Blue Phi take this year’s crown as STEP Stroll-Off Champs.
Review (MY TAKE): This event was very well organized and the leaders were dressed to impress which gave the impression that STEP is serious about community service and empowerment. I love the fact that various organizations from all walks of life in UMD’s black community partnered together to promote a worthy cause. The stroll-off seemed a little ill-prepared when it started but eventually things calmed down and went by smoothly. UMCPASA’s Kwame held down the fort and had attendees laughing throughout the festivities.
Nothing ever goes perfectly but I would honestly give this event 10/10 stars. Kudos.
