“The Wedding Ringer” is a must-see

On Saturday November 1st, comedian Kevin Hart and actor Josh Gad made an appearance at the University of Maryland for a pre-screening of their new movie “The Wedding Ringer.”

In 2011, director Paul Feig brought us hilarious wedding rom-com “Bridesmaids,”  but in January 2015, director/writer Jeremy Garelick brings us “The Wedding Ringer,” which could be everyone’s new favorite wedding movie of all time.

Produced by Adam Fields and Will Packer, “The Wedding Ringer” is definitely a must-see for the new year. Hart and Gad make up one of the most unexpectedly side-splitting duos movie lovers will ever see.

The writers bring us a well-written film that will make us laugh, cry, and laugh all over again. Kevin Hart, arguably the funniest comedian in the entertainment industry, stars as Jimmy,  owner of “The Best Man” wedding company. Hart gives “socially awkward” grooms-to-be a best man. Hart works with men like Gad’s character Doug, who has never had enough friends to have a best man or groomsmen.  After numerous phone calls to “frenemies,” Doug has no choice but to seek help from a professional. Doug pays for the seemingly impossible “Golden Tux,” a package that provides a best man and seven groomsmen in less than two weeks.

Although known solely for his comedy, Hart transitioned well into his role as Jimmy.  Audience members were able to see Hart’s character transform from being uninterested in forming relationships with his “loser” clients, to finding companionship in the awkward, yet lovable Doug.

Josh Gad also makes a transition, breaking from his popular role as Olaf in the animated musical “Frozen,” to Doug, a teddybear-like hopeless romantic who needs friends more than he does a bride.

In addition to the growing sympathy we have for Doug, his character also elicits moments of self-reflection within the audience. By the end of the movie, we are all able to see ourselves in Doug. “The Wedding Ringer” made the audience realize that we have all been losers, we have all been miserable and we have all been as lonely as Doug.

This movie will not only make you laugh until you can’t anymore, it will also have you wishing your wedding experience is as tumultuous and exciting (but not as painful) as Doug’s.
