Kendall Jenner Steps Out of Kardashian Shadow in New Allure Magazine

by JULIE PODCZASKI

In the March 2015 issue of Allure Magazine, Kendall Jenner gets candid about growing up in front of the camera, what it’s like to have Kim Kardashian-West as her older half-sis, and how she is breaking away from the “Kardashian Empire.”

Seen with curly hair and smudged black eye-liner, the 19-year-old model poses with co-star Marcel the Monkey who was also Ross’s pet on Friends.

From the beginning, Jenner says her and younger sister Kylie would take pictures of themselves in the backyard. “I would read magazines, and I would look at pictures with these women who looked so powerful,” Jenner says. “I wanted to be that to some little girl or little boy.”

After making it big in the modeling industry to the likes of Chanel, Givenchy, and Balmain (just to name a few), Jenner was criticized by some saying her new career was handed to her and that she didn’t work hard enough for it. While Jenner understands there will always be critics to fend off, she wants her work to stand apart from her older sisters.

At her first Marc Jacobs fashion show for the fall 2014 collection, she asked her sisters not to come. “I didn’t need it to be a family affair,” she says, almost apologetically.

“As selfish as this sounds, I wanted the attention to be on me for five seconds rather than my family. If they were sitting front row, it would have been all about, ‘Oh, Kim goes to Kendall’s first fashion show!'”

Later, she adds, “I love Kim, but for a minute I wanted it to be like, ‘OK, this is [Kendall’s] thing—she’s taking it seriously.”
