SNL ISIS Parody Stirs Up Major Controversy

by MARYAM OUTLAW

Saturday Night Live had many talking this week after the sketch comedy show poked fun at a recent Toyota commercial, which featured a young woman driving with her father to the airport after joining the U.S. military.

SNL’s spoof, however, depicts guest host Dakota Johnson, star of the film 50 Shades of Grey, leaving her tear-stained father, played by cast member Taran Killam, only to jump aboard a Toyota pickup truck and join ISIS militants.

The emotional patriarch watches, a terrorist group member says, “Death to America,” before driving away with their new teenage recruit.

The satirical snippet may have won over crowds initially, but some found the sketch to be tasteless, taking to Twitter to express their disapproval.

While many chose to reprimand the show for its seemingly insensitive commentary, others supported SNL and found the skit to be thought-provoking:

Of course, this is not the first time SNL has jokingly made fun of the United States’ ISIS crisis. Back in 2014, guest host Chris Rock starred as a foreign militant pitching the idea of ISIS to investors, in a sketch parody of ABC’s Shark Tank.

SNL has yet to comment, but Killam did tweet his own response to the denouncing remarks by defending the polarizing scene and noted that “freedom to mock is our greatest weapon.”
