Fraternity at the University of Oklahoma Under Fire After Racist Remarks

by JESSIE KARANGU

Controversy ensued at the University of Oklahoma over the weekend after a disparaging video featuring a prominent fraternity on campus went viral.

Members of Sigma Alpha Epsilon were videotaped singing a song with racial epithets. The song was sang to the tune of “If You’re Happy and You Know It, Clap Your Hands.”

“There will never be a ni**** in SAE.
There will never be a ni**** in SAE.
You can hang him from a tree, but he can never sign with me
There will never be a ni**** in SAE.”

The national chapter of the fraternity responded to the song by suspending the university’s chapter and revoking membership privileges of all members involved.

We apologize for the unacceptable and racist behavior of the individuals in the video, and we are disgusted that any member would act in such a way. Furthermore, we are embarrassed by this video and offer our empathy not only to anyone outside the organization who is offended but also to our brothers who come from a wide range of backgrounds, cultures and ethnicities.

A protest on campus is scheduled for Monday morning.

Here is the video many people are talking about today.

KWTV’s Heather Hope is reporting on Twitter that as the fraternity brothers pack their belongings and move out of their house, police have surrounded them to ensure their safety due to the national outrage this video has ignited.

Their building has also been spray-painted with writing that says ‘Tear It Down.’
