Spring’s MUST HEAR Music and MUST SEE Videos

by MYA GREEN

Hello fellow music lovers! Spring is finally here and the change in weather must have our favorite artists feeling just as good as we are because the new music that has come out in the past couple of weeks has been straight fire! Artists like Rihanna, James Bay, John Legend, and J. Cole have all been blessing our ears with new tunes just in time for Spring! Here are some new songs and music videos that will be added to our iTunes libraries soon enough.

1. Sam Smith and John Legend “Lay Me Down”

Sam Smith and John Legend teamed up in this remix of “Lay Me Down” for this year’s “Red Nose Day” sponsored by the Comic Relief fund based in the UK. The foundation raised over 115 million dollars at this year’s telethon and the proceeds will be going towards people in need in the UK and in Africa. The pair sing the touching track while footage is shown of people who are obviously in desperate need of relief. Clearly Sam Smith is just winning in life and John Legend continues to remind us all why his last name is well-deserved.

2. Janelle Monáe and Jidenna – “Yoga”

Janella Monáe has brought us many funky tracks that have had hidden messages beneath the beat and her new song “Yoga” is no exception. Monáe continues to express her sexual freedom with lines like “you cannot police me, so get off my areola,” and “I’m too much of a rebel, never do what I’m supposed ta/bendin over becky, baby watch and I’m a show ya, stretching out my cash, got my money doing yoga.” Even though the infectious beat makes you want to dance, it also empowers women to take control of their own sexual lives. Bravo Janelle! #Flex

3. J. Cole – “G.O.M.D.”

So if you haven’t heard J. Cole’s latest album 2014 Forest Hills Drive yet, I’m not quite sure what you have been doing. Cole’s latest track “G.O.M.D.” may stand for a very vulgar phrase but the video is the opposite of what you’re thinking it’ll be, I promise. Cole took the road less traveled and made a statement with his new video for the soon-to-be club banger and that’s why we love him.

4. James Bay – “Let It Go”

I stumbled across this song while working at the University bookstore and since we listen to the same playlist everyday, I’ve grown to love it. This gentle ballad grabs you by the heart strings and doesn’t let go. Bay, a 24-year-old from England, started his career back in 2013. He reminds me of a mix between Edward Scissorhands and John Mayer. If you’re ever in a sappy mood but want to listen to something good, James Bay has your back.

5. Fifth Harmony FT. Kid Ink – “Worth It”

Fifth Harmony has a new track with Kid Ink that I think could potentially catapult them into stardom. The fun summer anthem “Worth It” solidifies the group’s feminist agenda. They have a fierce sound that reminds me a lot of ’06 Danity Kane. They’re on their way to the top, especially considering not too many girl groups are dominating the charts right now.

6. Rihanna – BBHMM

Rih Rih is the G.O.A.T and this video of her performance dressed in a throwback Lil Kim fit at the iHeartRadio Music Awards proves just that. #Thatisall
