Landmark Apartments: Do They Miss the Mark?

by MYA GREEN

College Park is undergoing a serious face lift.

While many adjust to increased development, the demand for off-campus housing is increasing due to new on-campus housing policies at the University of Maryland.

Landmark Apartments, an apartment complex on Route 1 that used to house the Maryland Book Exchange, is now College Park’s newest housing option. Its luxurious modern design, huge glass windows and proximity to Target Express, another new building in the area, makes the building stand out to students looking for an off-campus option.

As each new apartment complex comes to College Park, pre-leasing an apartment that only offers virtual images and descriptions includes risk. However, this did not seem to be a problem for Landmark. The complex sold out rooms long before the 2015-2016 school year, despite slightly higher pricing than other apartments.

But is the grass greener in Landmark’s zen garden? Pulsefeedz spoke with residents to gather their opinions of the complex so far.

“I think it’s a great place to live because it’s a short walk from campus and it is conveniently located around a lot of restaurants such as Bagel Place and Blaze,” junior Alix Gollomp said.

However, other students were unimpressed with how thin the walls are.

“We can hear the people above us constantly,” junior Caitlyn Nicholas said.

Initially, Nicholas thought the residents above her were just stomping and being loud, but soon Nicholas found out that residents below her were having the same problem with Nicholas and her roommate.

Similarly, resident Michelle Meshnick finds the noise distracting at times.

“If you are trying to study in one of the study rooms on a Tuesday or Thursday night, you’ll definitely hear the parties going on,” Meshnick said.

Landmark Apartments will also have to compete with future complexes. Terrapin Row, originally the Knox Boxes, is already leasing for the 2016-2017 year. Monument Village is another new apartment complex currently in construction on Route 1 and will only offer single or double room options.
