5 Things You Should Know About New “The Daily Show” Host Trevor Noah

Earlier this week, Comedy Central announced that political jokester Trevor Noah will succeed current host Jon Stewart in late 2015, which many are pretty pumped about. But, for those who have no idea who this ambiguously tanned man in a suit is, here are five facts worth knowing about the entertainer.

1. He’s foreign: Don’t worry. He is NOT part of this weird 21st century pop culture British invasion America seems to be suffering from. Noah was actually born and raised in South Africa during apartheid when interracial relationships were illegal, which is pretty awkward considering his mother is a black South African and his father is Caucasian. As a result, Noah’s humor is primarily based upon global perceptions and ethnic material. Fun fact: this dude is crazy fluent in an absurd amount of languages including German, Japanese and Sotho…whatever that is.

Scandal Review: Put A Ring On It

Hello Gladiator friends!

I have returned from my brief hiatus, and I regret to inform you that it was caused by a terrible, non-Shonda induced illness and non-TGIT related responsibilities. I wish that I was away on Scandal business but some dreams don’t come true. Le sigh.  Anywho, I’m cured and back better than ever with more hi-jinks and straight foolishness created by our beloved Shonda Rhimes.

I didn’t get a chance to tweet Shonda this week, but next week, it’s on. You have been fairly warned.

Let’s get into it!

Tom Hanks Stars in New Carly Rae Jepsen Music Video

Carly Rae Jepsen recently released a music video for her new single “I Really Like You,” featuring a very unexpected A-lister: Tom Hanks.

Depicting a light-hearted day in the life, Hanks can be seen waking up in the wee hours of the morning, high fiving random pedestrians, texting emojis, and eventually joining Jespen for an extravagant dance number, all while lip-synching her lyrics.

Of course, the first thing that comes to mind when people think of Jepsen and her whimsical pop music world probably does not involve the two-time Oscar winner. However, the two happen to be a lot closer than we thought.

According to, Hanks and Jepsen’s manager, Scooter Braun, are good friends. So, when she mentioned the idea of a man singing her song for the music video, he offered to play himself.

However, Hanks is not the only star to collaborate with Jepesn. Justin Bieber also makes a 30-second cameo.

While Hanks is set to release three new films this year, Jepsen’s record already has six million hits on YouTube. She currently has no release date for her next album.

SNL ISIS Parody Stirs Up Major Controversy

Saturday Night Live had many talking this week after the sketch comedy show poked fun at a recent Toyota commercial, which featured a young woman driving with her father to the airport after joining the U.S. military.

SNL’s spoof, however, depicts guest host Dakota Johnson, star of the film 50 Shades of Grey, leaving her tear-stained father, played by cast member Taran Killam, only to jump aboard a Toyota pickup truck and join ISIS militants. Continue reading SNL ISIS Parody Stirs Up Major Controversy

This Week in Kanye: Apologies, Zane Lowe, and New Music

Kanye West and Zane Lowe

On Thursday, Kanye West stopped by Zane Lowe’s BBC Radio 1 show again, only this time, he wasn’t so angry. West spoke about his collaboration with Adidas, his upcoming album, why Drake is so hot right now, and even began crying.

When Kanye’s Yeezy Boosts released a few weeks ago, fans were shocked by the high price of $350. They thought the whole point of his collaboration with Adidas was to make products affordable. While West cannot control the price right now, he said he is working on it.

“Nothing should be exclusive. Everyone should have an opportunity to drink from the same fountain. The idea of exclusivity is a new colored people fountain. We have to reboot that mentality for an entire generation.”

Although he didn’t talk about his album too much, West related it to the beauty of the struggle. “The College Dropout came out of a fight to rap. This new album’s coming out of a fight to design.”

After hearing “Only One” featuring Paul McCartney and “FourFiveSeconds” with Rihanna and Paul McCartney, fans are left wanting more.

Why Is #TheDress Trending?

A day which started with random llamas roaming the streets of Phoenix got even weirder late Thursday night after a dress stole the Internet’s attention.

No, there is nothing fancy about this dress. It wasn’t worn by a major celebrity. It’s not worth a $1 million and it’s not the trendiest look in the world either. Believe it or not, the world has been arguing about the color of this infamous dress.

The trend began on Tumblr, a social media site which is known for random stories from everyday people blowing up as well as the GIFs posted by so many of its users.

And then it took off from there. The question of whether this dress is white and gold or black and blue stole the hearts and minds of a generation.

Tumblr users started tweeting about this brain teaser but it didn’t really blow up until BuzzFeed posted a story about this trending topic together with a poll surveying readers about what they thought the color of the dress was.

BuzzFeed’s story has been viewed more than 12 million times and helped the site make history. For the first time ever, the trendy news source had over 670,000 users simultaneously reading the site which is also the number of viewers who watched the season finale of HBO’s Girls in 2014.

Websites don’t usually have the same number of simultaneous viewers as television series often so this was a major feat to accomplish and shows how big the story has become.

The dress also has over 380,000 likes on Tumblr and has helped the original poster of this trend, ‘swiked,’ gain more than two thousand new followers on her page.

In an interview with BuzzFeed, ‘swiked’ aka Caitlin McNeill revealed that the dress is indeed black and blue in reality. Two of McNeill’s friends were getting married and the bride’s mother sent the soon to be newlyweds a picture via text message of the dress she would be wearing on their wedding day. The bride and the groom argued over the colors of the dress and posted the same picture on Facebook to see what their friends thought.

McNeill was one of the individuals engaging with this debate on Facebook and decided to share the debate with her Tumblr followers by reposting the photo.

“Then it went absolutely mental,” she said. “Some friends tweeted it, and within the hour I had tens of thousands of notes, tweets, messages.”

Here is more proof that the dress is in fact black and blue.

Campus Solutions Brings A New Perspective To UMD’s Campus!

There appears to be something new and local for UMD students to fill that void for a humorous take on news after Jon Stewart’s recent announcement of retirement.

Where’s that potential?

It resides in a team of students with their creator, Adam Goldberg, a public relations sophomore and creator of Campus Solutions.

Scandal review: No More Blood

Good– no, GREAT afternoon, my Gladiator friends!

Today is a great day because all is well with the world of Scandal. Well, almost all, but that’s not relevant right now. What’s important is that the asset has been recovered, our fearless leader has been returned to us and Shonda has saved us all from the separation anxiety from Liv that we have been suffering from for weeks.

Although Shonda blessed us with an episode that didn’t having us clutching our pearls in fear of what would happen next, she of course, didn’t fail to throw in several plot twists. Because of said twists, Shonda received several tweets from my followers and myself, none of which she responded to, but it’s okay. I’m not bitter, I am not upset….

Yes, I am.

ANYWAYS, down to business.

Empire Review: Lyons, and Sex, and Drugs! Oh My!

*SPOILER ALERT: If you haven’t seen this week’s episode, you may want to come back and read after you have*

Well folks, I don’t know about you but I am still stunned by this week’s dose of melodrama from FOX’s highest rated show this season. Every Wednesday when the clock strikes nine we wait by our televisions for our favorite musical drama (and to see Cookie’s sassy antics and killer outfits, duh). The music is catchy and the acting is bearable so we tune in faithfully and this week was a treat to say the least.

When the drama begins we see Lucius Lyon having to make a decision that seems like a no brainer about who to bring with him to the hospital after fainting. The fact that he had to think twice about whether to bring Anika or Cookie really gave us clues about what was to come. There have been flirty vibes and romantic gazes exchanged all season between Cookie and Lyon so when they…well, let’s save the best for last shall we.
