And The Word Of The Year Is…

Each year the British publishers of the Oxford Dictionary and the American publishers of the Merriam – Webster Dictionary choose a word of the year. What were this year’s word choices?

Well the Oxford dictionary chose the word “Selfie” and the Merriam- Webster dictionary chose the word “Science”. Selife might’ve been chosen because it sounds more editorial, but why was the word “Science” chosen as the word of the year? It sounds pretty basic if you ask me.

According to Time magazine the Merriam- Webster dictionary relies on numbers when it comes to choosing the word of the year…meaning lots and lots of people looked up the definition of science this year. The dictionary itself picked the word that had the biggest spike in lookups, and for the year 2013 that word was science.

2012’s winner was a tie between the words “Socialism” and “Capitialism”

As to who is looking up the definition of “Science” this much? Well if you think about it, alot of the new stories this year pertained to science in one way or another.

The Merriam -Webster Dictionary defines Science as follows.

sci·ence noun \ˈsī-ən(t)s\

: knowledge about or study of the natural world based on facts learned through experiments and observation

: a particular area of scientific study (such as biology, physics, or chemistry) : a particular branch of science

: a subject that is formally studied in a college, university, etc.

Well that’s some interesting information, if you didn’t know what the word of the year was before…you do now!

Joe Jonas Comes Clean

Former Disney Star Joe Jonas is coming clean in a new interview in which he talks about losing his virginity, smoking pot for the first time and more.

In an essay in New York Magazine called “Joe Jonas: My life as a Jonas Brother” the former band member starts out the interview by talking about Fame at an early age:

“We didn’t want to disappoint anyone—our parents, our fans, our employers—so we put incredible pressure on ourselves, the kind of pressure that no teenager should be under. We were just kids. That’s the reality. We were frightened little kids. So you got all this responsibility that’s foisted upon you and you’re expected to be perfect. I went through media training, and I hated it”

Next he talks about how it was being a “Disney Kid” and all the expectations that come with that.

“Disney is great at creating fame…but being a part of a company like that comes with certain expectations. Not overtly, but there was a subtle vibe. We were working with Disney in 2007 when the Vanessa Hudgens nude-photo scandal happened. We heard that she had to be in the Disney offices for a whole day because they were trying to figure out how to keep her on lockdown.”

As you probably remember, the Jonas Brothers all wore promise rings that meant they wouldn’t be sexually active until they were married or found the perfect girl. “The topic that dominated news coverage of us for a long time was the whole promise-ring thing. We couldn’t escape it…Because of our age, because of Disney, because of those rings, there were so many things throughout our career that we had to sugarcoat. If a lyric was slightly sexual, someone at the record company would tell us we had to change it. I lost my virginity when I was 20. I did other stuff before then, but I was sexually active at 20. I’m glad I waited for the right person, because you look back and you go, ‘That girl was bats–t crazy. I’m glad I didn’t go there.”

So who could be the girl that he lost his virginity too? Sources close to the star are saying that it could be his ex – Twilight star Ashley Greene. The two were dating at the time but soon broke up due to distance.

Later Joe talks about his first experience smoking weed. He says “The first time I smoked weed was with Demi and Miley. I must have been 17 or 18. They kept saying, ‘Try it! Try it!’ so I gave it a shot, and it was all right. I don’t even smoke weed that often anymore.”

Finally I’m sure all the JB fans are wanting to know the real reason behind the band’s breakup. Joe spills all the details and gives us an inside look into all of the details surronding the band’s breakup.

“We hit a place where we just weren’t jelling on the same things, and we didn’t want to become a band that was worried about the fact that people didn’t understand how cool we were. The whole situation was breaking us up as a family, and we ultimately felt like we were holding each other back.

“Things came to a head when we had a meeting where we thought we were going to talk about how to release our new music and it ended up shifting into this huge fight. That was the first time we were really honest with one another about a lot of stuff we weren’t happy with. The fight got loud. I was screaming. When Nick presented the idea of closing a chapter and moving on, I freaked out. I didn’t know whether to pick up and leave or just punch something, because I was furious. I’d spent so long working with my brothers on this band, and in my mind, it felt like we were just giving up. It didn’t make sense to me.

“But once I started peeling back the layers, I understood. There were a lot of dysfunctional things going on…After that meeting, we took a night to think about things, met again, and nothing was resolved, so we decided to take a week and think about it. Then we canceled the tour. It would have been really tough for me to go on a last-hurrah tour. I didn’t care about the money; I just wanted to figure out the right, healthy way for us to be good as a family.”

Joe certainly unlocked the vault on all of these things that his fans might’ve not known about his life. It just goes to show you that he’s human just like the rest of us!

Man Shot Inside of Voltage Nightclub in Baltimore

A 24 year old man was shot inside of the Voltage nightclub over the weekend. The incident occurred Sunday morning around 1:45am after a police officer heard a gunshot inside of the club. The victim suffered a gunshot to his back but is expected to survive.

Voltage usually closes around 1:40am so the shooting most likely occurred as attendees were leaving. This shooting does raise concerns about how an individual was able to get past security with a gun despite the multiple checkpoints which are in existence.

New Video Of Mike Tomlin Incident Shows That It May Have Not Been Intentional

download (11)

Mike Tomlin has been caught up in a major controversy lately after sticking his foot out on the field as Jacoby Jones was recovering a kick return. Many Ravens fans have been irate at the play because of the detrimental consequences which could’ve occured. It has also been reported that the NFL is considering major fines as well as possibly taking away a draft pick from the Steelers.

A new video from KDKA-TV in Pittsburgh has surfaced though and it could show proof that Tomlin’s interference was not intentional. It doesn’t help that Tomlin was laughing on the sidelines after the play was over but this video could help Tomlin prove his case.

Here’s a link to the video, which is currently not embeddable.

UPDATE: Nevermind, it was intentional. Here’s a GIF courtesy of Deadspin which shows Tomlin moving forward on the field as Jacoby runs towards him.

Looks like there’s a coach in the Boston area who has a history of doing the same thing.

UMD Dining Service Hours Extended

Courtesy: The Diamondback

Unfortunately, finals are coming soon. Because of the inordinate hours which students are still awake, dining services at the University of Maryland have decided to extend it’s hours for the first time ever, according to The Diamondback.

Commons Shop – open until 2am (December 14th – December 20th)

Footnotes (in the library) – open 24 hours a day (December 15th – December 21st)

Adele’s – serve dinner through December 19th

North Campus/South Campus Dining Halls – Normal late night hours begin on December 15th (NORTH), December 16th (SOUTH), open at 6:45am.

STAMP (Chick-Fil-A, Coffee Bar, Union Shop) – open at 7am.

“To make sure it has enough staff for the extended hours, Dining Services plans to ask student employees their availabilities and then fill empty slots with  full-time workers’ shifts. Student workers will then be scheduled based on their own exam and study schedules, he said.”

Shoutout to UMD for being CLUTCH!!!

Blackwell Library Open 24/5!!!

download (10)

Blackwell Library will be open 24 hours a day this week!!! There’s a catch though. It’ll only be only 24 hours a day for 5 days this week and you won’t be able to use library supplies after 2am. But, it is progress after many students in the past have complained about the lack of a place to study after-hours.

Here’s the schedule courtesy of The Flyer:

Sunday 12/1 11 a.m. to Friday 12/6 10 p.m.

Saturday 12/7 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Sunday 12/8 11 a.m. to Friday 12/13 8 p.m.

Last school year around March, students started a petition to get the library opened 24/7. Here are some details from WMDT (disclosure: I was interviewed for the story):

The students behind the petition say extra hours could help them perform better in their studies. “I’m gonna be studying a lot of medical terms. Everything, so I can’t just be ‘alright you gotta leave at 2:00 AM’ I might have to go until 3 or 4,” said Logan Middlekauff, who started the petition.

They say if it were open later, more students would utilize the facilities. “I Feel like students don’t come to the library as much because it’s not open 24 hours. Which is why late at night you probably only see 5 or 6 people in the library,” said Jessie Karangu, a sophomore that helped spread the petition.

BTW, just a suggestion. If you ever need a place to study: Dunkin’ Donuts is definitely the move. Free wifi and it’s open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The heartbeat of campus news!
