Nickelodeon star Jennette McCurdy is currently trending on Twitter after being caught in a whirlwind of controversy involving herself and her ex, Andre Drummond.
In a podcast with comedian Pete Holmes, McCurdy admitted that she wasn’t really interested in dating the Detroit Pistons basketball player who courted her via social media.

Why Is There Such A Love/Hate Relationship Towards Lupita In The Black Community?

So often, the black community in the United States is quick to call out injustice which is committed by other races against our own without failing to recognize our own innate injustices which we commit against each other.
The black community is so eager to be on equal footing and accepted by the rest of society but yet we don’t even accept ourselves.
As Lupita Nyong’o made history last night, becoming just the ninth woman of color to win an Oscar, most people cheered in gratitude for what this moment meant for women and specifically black women.
But many others on social media spread their hateful, vile reactions to Lupita’s win.
Where does this hate stem from?
In my opinion, certain African-Americans are afraid to see darker-skinned people succeed. I don’t think it’s because they hate dark-skinned people or because of jealousy.
I think it’s because they view people like Lupita, Barkhad Abdi and Gabby Sidibe (two other people of color who were prominently featured during the Oscars telecast) as a threat to their own livelihoods.
None of those mentioned above fit the conventional European style of beauty which society is so accustomed to.
Because of this, some black people assume that these stars are accepted in white society only because they are a reminder to Caucasians of the past struggle which African-Americans have fought against being stereotyped as.
As young kids when we were taught about slavery, dark skinned blacks were the face of that plight. In order to avoid ever being cast as the face of plight again, we look for present-day heroes and icons who are fair-skinned and walk, talk and dress like the conventional European look.
Little do those narrow-minded people realize that you are playing a role in continuing the ignorance which has existed for so long. You are also underestimating how much progress we’ve made as a society when you assume that all black people are looked at by others as an inferior people.
If we as a black people want to be accepted in society, then we must first accept our own beauty no matter what shade, shape or structure it comes in.
When you spread hate amongst your own people, you are not only hurting them but you are hurting yourself.
You don’t have to like Lupita’s acting. You don’t have to be attracted to her. You don’t even have to like her personality. But at the very least, respect her.
Respect the moment for what it is and take heed in understanding how valuable and extraordinary this moment is in women’s history, black history and world history.
Lupita deserves nothing but praise for what she was able to accomplish.
“No matter where you’re from, your dreams are valid.”
Scandal Recap
“Scandal” had everyone tweeting and talking last night when Season 3 returned. For those of you who missed last night’s episode, don’t worry Pulsefeedz has you covered.
After murdering her husband, Sally Langston admitted that she has decided to run against President Grant in the next election. However, Sally told President Grant that she would not be stepping down as the current Vice President. This caused Fitz to go into an uproar and engage in a full on “drink in the middle of the day panic” where he quickly named California governor, Andrew Nichols, as his new running mate.
Meanwhile, Quinn was off portraying the role of the perfect girlfriend with Charlie and helped him kidnap a coroner’s kid. Harrison received a booty call from his past when Nazanin Boniadi from “Homeland” showed up, unannounced at O.P.A.
James revealed that he despises his husband and has since been leaking information regarding the Daniel Douglas Langston murder cover-up to the press.
You’re probably wondering what Olivia Pope was doing? Olivia received a shocking threat from her father telling her to run and hide because he was destined to get back at Fitz, for kicking him out of B613. Olivia also named Jake as her new fake boyfriend, so the press would stop claiming her as Fitz’s mistress.

Can You Really Leave Class If Your Professor Doesn’t Show Up After 15 Minutes?
It’s happened to everyone before. You show up to class on time but for some reason your professor is nowhere to be seen. You check your email to see if you missed anything before you stepped out of the door, you ask around to see if your classmates have any intel of the professor’s whereabouts and you even check your syllabus to see if you’re scheduled to meet for class that day.
And then, that one person who has never said a word in your class before mentions that it is school policy that students are allowed to leave class after 15 minutes if the professor is a no-show. It’s 10 minutes past the top of the hour and everyone is antsy because there’s five minutes left before you can potentially leave class early.
But wait. Has anyone ever checked to actually see if this policy is actually true?
After looking through the guidelines of the University of Maryland’s student and faculty handbooks, there is nothing in written form which states that students are allowed to leave class after 15 minutes if the professor doesn’t show up.
The only information which is somewhat related to this issue is found in the faculty handbook:
Faculty are, therefore, expected to convene all classes for the entire stated time. For rare circumstances that preclude convening classes, the instructor should notify the department chair as far in advance as possible and, where possible, notify affected students.
So technically, if we make inferences based of off the language written in the faculty handbook, if a teacher fails to notify students of their tardiness in advance then the student has every right to leave the class at their discretion without any penalty.
But is that honestly the smart thing to do? No.
You’ve already put a lot of effort into waking up from your uncomfortable dorm bed into the cold, frigid weather. Why not just sit patiently and wait for your professor to arrive?
Here are some tips if you are stuck in this situation:
- If you truly have the urge to leave class because your professor hasn’t shown up yet, send a respectful email message letting them know that you showed up to class and that you look forward to meeting with them whenever your next class period is. Be human and understanding. Things happen, that’s life.
- Despite the last bullet point, I highly suggest and recommend that you stay in class for as long as the allotted time is that you’re supposed to be there. Send a message to the professor asking them respectfully where they are and use that time to review various lessons/concepts with your fellow classmates.
- By reviewing classwork with fellow classmates, you show your professor that you’re willing to make a sacrifice to get the highest grade possible. If the professor eventually shows up, it is also very likely that you will be awarded with extra credit, and who doesn’t like extra credit?
- To avoid any confusion, ask your professor about what their faculty tardiness rules and regulations are in the beginning of the semester so that everyone involved is clear of what is expected.
- For non-UMD students: Check your school’s respective student and faculty handbooks. Some schools such as Clemson do have written policy that allows students to leave after 15 mins. if they have a tardy professor.
In conclusion, at the University of Maryland, is it true that students can leave class after 15 minutes if their professor doesn’t arrive? No.
Are students allowed to leave at anytime if their professor doesn’t show up? Technically yes, although this is not written anywhere.
Should students leave early if the professor is a no-show? It’s all subjective but my suggestion is no. If you’re being honest with yourself then you know there’s no benefit.

Alec Baldwin Throws In The Towel
Alec Baldwin is no stranger to speaking his mind. The actor is constantly making headlines for his controversial words.
In a 5,284 word essay to New York Magazine, the actor said goodbye to public life and announced that he has decided to move to California. In the February issue, Baldwin wrote:
“I loathe and despise the media in a way I did not think possible. This is the last time I’m going to talk about my personal life in an American publication ever again.”
Baldwin then decided to give the interviewer a recap of his wild year.
“I find myself bitter, defensive, and more misanthropic than I care to admit. And I’m trying to understand what happened, how an altercation on the street, in which I was accused—wrongly—of using a gay slur, could have cascaded like this. There’s been a shift in my life. And it’s caused me to step back and say, ‘This is happening for a reason.'”
Acknowledging his reputation as a hothead, Baldwin revisited an incident that occurred in November when a TMZ photographer:
“Ambushed me as I was putting my family in the car, and I chased him down the block and said, ‘C—sucking mother—er”.
After this incident Baldwin was accused of being a homophobe by Andrew Sullivan and Anderson Cooper. When asked if he was a homophobe, he clearly said:
“I’m not a homophobic person at all. But this is how the world now sees me.”
After his rant, Baldwin was fired from his talk show, “Up Late”.
As his 5,284 word essay continued, Baldwin accused MSNBC talk show host Rachel Maddow of causing his firing calling Maddow a phony who doesn’t have the same passion for the truth off-camera that she seems to have on the air.
Maddow kindly sent Baldwin a tweet that said:
“I have never met Mr. Baldwin on camera or off camera. I wish him all the best.”
Mr. Baldwin hopes to start over in L.A.
This will be his first time moving since moving to the Big Apple in 1979. In the final words of his essay Baldwin explained the reason he want’s to move.
“I did not have a happy family life a few years ago. I was divorced from Kim Basinger and I was very alienated from my daughter Ireland Baldwin and I was out there cutting every ribbon and running around New York hosting events for different causes to supplant my loss, because I didn’t have a family to go home to. Now I don’t want to be Mr. Show Business anymore. I want the same thing everybody else wants. I want a happy home, and for the first time in my adult life, I have one,” he wrote. “I love my wife more than anything in the world and I love my child [Carmen, 6 months, with wife Hilaria] more than anything else in the world and I don’t want that to change in any way.”

UMD Data Breach Explainer/Social Media Reaction
On Wednesday night, The Diamondback broke a story which has jolted the entire UMD community.
What happened?
On Tuesday morning between 4 and 5 a.m., the social security numbers, university ID numbers, names and birth dates of over 309,000 students and staff was accessed by an unknown source.
The university’s systems first detected a problem around 8 a.m.
Why is this such a big issue?
Unlike credit cards, it’s very difficult to replace Social Security numbers. The Social Security Administration requires you to report identity theft with the FTC as well as through an Internet complaint form, which can take a long time to process.
Every private business and government agency that you’ve ever dealt with, will have records of your old SSN and it’ll become a big hassle to deal with those entities if your new SSN number isn’t registered to your credit history OR if those businesses and agencies don’t have your new SSN to begin with.
What can I do?
Monitor all of your financial, credit card, health care, tax records. Make sure everything is normal. If it is not, then it’s very likely that you are a victim of identity fraud.
What is UMD doing to help students who may be affected?
The University will be offering a full year of credit monitoring. They have also set up a hot line (301-405-4440) and an email address (datasecurity@umd.edu) to help with any questions anyone has.
How do I find out if I was affected?
According to Reddit user xenonscreams:
So I called that hotline number (which redirected to the IT Help Desk haha) and the lady who answered said the investigative panel is working on compiling the names and that on the website at some point, there will be a tool where you will be able to enter your name and see if you are affected by the breach.
She did not know if every single person was affected for sure, but at least we’ll have definitive answers in the future.

Pharrell’s Grammy Hat For Sale
Music mogul Pharrell had people talking at this year’s Grammy Awards when he walked the red carpet wearing a large obnoxious hat.
Pharrell is now auctioning off his hat, but the price tag isn’t cheap.
The “Lucky” singer tweeted:
“I’m auctioning off my hat from the Grammys to benefit From One Hand to Another”
Then he joked:
“Hey @Arby’s, you want my hat? Now’s your chance…”
So how much is the hat going for?
With free standard shipping, the current bid of the hat is $10,500 on eBay. There are currently 64 bids on the hat and you have until March 2nd to come up with the cash to bid on this high priced accessory.
The profits aren’t going into Pharrell’s pockets according to the eBay post:

Ava Marie is the first grandchild for Mike’s father, “In Living Color” alum Damon Wayans Sr. and Vanessa’s dad, rap icon Joseph “Rev Run” Simmons of Run D.M.C.
“Warm Bodies” star Teresa Palmer and husband Mark Webber welcomed their first child together.
The pair welcomed a baby boy into the world together on Monday. Palmer took to Instagram today to share the great news, the actress posted a photo with the caption: “Thank you God for blessing us with the most divine gift of our baby son”
The happy couple tied the knot February 6th in an intimate ceremony. Congratulations!
Kevin and Danielle Jonas have also welcomed a baby into their lives in recent weeks.
The dynamic duo welcomed baby Alana Rose on Sunday, February 2nd. Danielle took to Instagram posting this picture of her little girl with the caption:

The pair welcomed their baby boy into the world on Valentines Day. The couple named their son after Cowell’s father, Eric Selig Phillip Cowell, who passed away in 1999.
